About the designer
I am greatly inspired by the ideas and concepts surrounding the future and how to translate this into forms. Once graduating from LCF with this in mind I created the brand ‘TAWN’ as a creative outlet, for a fun and individual persona.
Description of the collection
We are currently creating and living within our own dystopia. moving towards the uncertain whilst looking in and watching ourselves as if for pleasure. With my first collection ‘Crystallography’ I wanted to portray this uneasy feeling of the dystopian future.
‘Crystallography’ was inspired by a number of different things within a futuristic context. It was the study of crystals growth and the detailed mutations in Anime ‘Akira’ by Otomo. A mixture of organic growth and beautiful mutations.
Using extracts from the book ‘The crystal world’ by J.G Ballard, where crystals continue to grow to the point of extinction of all species, I felt compelled to create the mixture of beauty and disaster.
By creating my own fabrics through a mixture of felting, dying and excessive beading it brought me closer to an idea not completely recognizable.
In helping to portray this I also like to use different materials within my work to add depth, another dimension; such as resin, silicone and heat torched plastics.
Texture and colour are extremely important to this collection as I wanted to keep the pieces as organic looking as possible inspiring the handmade fabrics, with textures trapped under a layer of iridescent gauze. Other techniques included dip dyed knitting and extensive hand sewing, along with making my own resin and salt crystals.
